Friday we drove up to Muir Woods.
I love Muir Woods. It's one of my favorite places. I always feel like I'm in another world and the trees themselves are humbling. I feel very small and very insignificant.

Of course, everytime someone comes to visit we always end up going to Muir Woods. However, this is the first time that I've ever gotten anybody to hike up the Ocean View Trail with me. Let me also clarify that I had not yet hiked it because I wanted someone to go with me. It's also a long hike - about 2 hours up the side of the mountain. And much longer than the basic trail that all the tourist do which is only about and hour and flat enough you can do it in a wheelchair.

On Friday, everyone was game to try the long hike and so we did. The first 15 minutes are horrendous. It's completely up. We all made it up and things evened out. Still up, but at least the incline was not as steep. We were all taking a ton of pictures, It's nice to be able to see above the trees. There were a few times that I was thinking to myself that I should just go back down the hill and wait for everyone. However, this was my suggestion so I decided to stick with it.

I am sooooooo out of shape. This is a really sad observation on my part. I don't remember getting out of shape, but apparently I needed something like this to kick my ass.

At a point where we were all thinking - shouldn't we be there - we ran into a couple coming down the mountain and asked how much further. About 15 minutes they said and that there was a restaurant at the top. The four of us were motivated by the thought of food, so we all huffed and puffed up to the top of the trail. You couldn't see the ocean because the fog had rolled in really thick but we had a beautiful view of San Francisco Bay. Some food, some aqua and a little rest and we were ready to go back down the mountain.

Going down the mountain wasn't bad on the lungs, but it was tough on the legs. And we were motivating everyone we passed on the way down with the thought of food at the top. We saw a woodpecker. Took a ton of pictures of a chipmunk near the gift shop. All in all we had a great time.

What I found funny was that everyone was having second thoughts about continuing halfway up the mountain, but we all didn't want to wimp out and go back down the mountain. I've finally worked all the soreness out, but I'm back on the exercise wagon. I don't like feeling this out of shape.
