I had to take RTL to the airport this morning and on the way back home the radio station that I was listening to played Not Tonight by The New Cars. I had already seen a spot on VH-1 (yes, I watch way too much VH-1) about The New Cars. I thought it was either a strange way for The Cars to make a comeback or a lawsuit waiting to happen. Then I heard the song this morning and it has the same flavor as the hits The Cars had back in the 80's. Part of me was excited because I always loved The Cars and a bit disappointed that they felt the need to change the name. Then the radio announcer starts talking about how Todd Rundgren is the new singer for The New Cars. Wait a minute? What about Ric Ocasek? Of course, the minute I walked in the door I looked this up on the internet and find this article. So the guitarist and the keyboardist from The Cars has "revived" the band, brought on Todd Rundgren as lead singer and changed the name to The New Cars to avoid legal issues. I like the song, but couldn't they have come up with a new name instead of recycling?

I agree with you that a new name was/is in order. I suspect they picked they did to get a following of "old" fans, without having to rely on the actual music itself. sad but true.

Out of curiosity, what do you think of INXS keeping their name? I am ok with that one because Michael didn't form INXS, it was the Farris brothers who did....at least I think I'm ok with it ;)

I'd really like to know what was going through their heads when they decided they wanted to start playing again. I think it may have gone something like this -

keyboardist - dude! I just saw that VH-! show Bands Reunited and I think we should get The Cars back together

Guitarist - Dude! Ric's not going to go for that, it's been almost 20 years since we disbanded.

K - I know, but wouldn't it be so cool. I've got this cool tune going through my head, listen [piano playing in the background]

G - Cool man! That so sounds like us.

K - Man, we've got to call Ric.

G - No! I've got a better idea. We'll skip Ric 'cuz you know he's going to say no and give us a hard time. I'll call Ted Rundgren to be lead singer for the new Cars.

K - The New Cars? DUDE! That is the best new name for us! And Ric can't complain because we won't be The Cars, we'll be The New Cars.

It's just wrong.

As for INXS, I thought about them keeping the name. Especially since I just saw the video with JD. I think I'm ok with that because even though Michael was a major part of INXS, he wasn't solely INXS. Although, I really think that INXS should actually be referred to as INXS featuring JD Fortune or maybe INXS post-Michael. He may have won, but he'll never take the place of Michael.
