What part of 'no' do phone solicitors not understand?

I'm sitting on the couch, relaxing and eating my dinner sans RTL and the phone rings. OK, I answered it. But only because I thought it was RTL telling me that she was safely in DeLand. It's the NCSU Alumni Association. I said that it wasn't a good time but asked the purpose of the call. They want me to join the alumni association and want me to know that just because I'm an alumni does not mean I have membership in the alumni association. Duh! Then he goes into his spiel and asking me if I can be counted on for a 5 year membership! First of all, I've already said this wasn't a good time and secondly, I don't do anything over the phone that involves me sending money. I explain this and ask if information could be sent to me via mail or a website that I could check out. Apparently, there is a mathematics student who can't wait for me to read more about the alumni association as he **needs** my membership to guarantee that he has a scholarship to continue his studies. Yeah, I paid off my student loans and he can too. Let's not forget all the jobs I worked to pay what my student loans didn't cover. That sob story certainly wasn't getting a dime out of me. Yes, I sound cruel, but this is one of those things where whining gets you nowhere with me. However, the thing that annoyed me the most was that even when I repeated my request for material mailed or a website, he still refused to give me that information. OK, so I know that his goal was to get me to sign up then and there, but come on, I might consider joining if I could check things out first on my own.

I so phone sales for a living and I don't take no for an answer, because I can't and if I did, I wouldn't get anywhere. Most of the leads I get start off as No's.

What frustrates me and why I feel bad when I'm saying no is I know that is how the people who call support themselves and their families and a no means not meeting quota. No, I'm not just saying that because you do phone sales. I used to listen and could be persuaded after the initial no. After I went through the stolen identity thing unless I call specifically, have a website, or a brochure in my hands, I don't trust that the person on the other side of the phone really represents the company they say they work for. Although, I think my real issue tonight was the fact that the caller wanted me to make a decision right then because "the students couldn't wait", but I didn't have an option other than a 5 year membership. I should just not answer the phone. That would solve all my problems.

Caller ID with Anon. Number Block would do ir. I am not saying buy,I would never give my credit card to a telemarketer. Most of the buisnesses I worked at did not require me to ask for one.

You can always say no. Unless it's for the paper, take the paper. I really believe everyone should have a daily paper.

And surveys, do those. They cost you nothing but time and you could be saving someone's job.
