It's Monday morning and I guess I need to get it together and get going, but first things first.
I don't understand why Monday through Friday getting up before 7 a.m. is a chore, but on Saturday and Sunday, once the sun peaks through the curtains I'm bright-eyed, bushy tailed and rip-raring to go. Maybe it's a sign I need less sleep and not more.
Saturday was supposed to be a chore day. And I guess it did turn out to be, instead of doing most of the cleaning like we needed to, we cut all the baseboards for the kitchen. Someone please remind me that the next time I want to put in new baseboards to find the corner pieces so that I don't have to miter the corners. Mitering that large space with 25 billion corners was a pain in the butt, not to mention the amount of back-thinking needed to make sure the angles were going the right direction. I suppose eventually today I will nail them in.
Ronette and I were both kicking ourselves because we had both forgotten that we had invited our friend George over for brunch on Sunday. It's hard to come up with a brunch menu; you don't want it to be too breakfast-y or too lunch-y. We finally decided on stuffed cabbage with asparagus, beet salad, and some strawberry shortcake for dessert. Everything was wonderful which included George literally licking his plate. The only disaster was my pound cake. I should take a picture of what was left after the fall. I opted to make the pound cake in a tube pan - note to self: bake this recipe in the 3 loaf pans next time. It was beautiful - in the pan. I tried to turn it out onto the cake plate and *bam* it collapsed. We had pile of cake. I've never seen cake do this before. I've had trouble with cakes that didn't want to release from the pan, but never collapsing on itself. Perhaps the cake needed to cook a bit longer. Or maybe the cake was too dense and heavy to hold itself up. I'm not sure. It was still tasty with strawberries spooned over it.
I think that we had both planned to be really productive after George left, we had a really clean house and all, but we weren't. We ended up lazing away on the couch watching the America's Next Top Model marathon. Then as we were both complaining that it was really hot and we were both hungry, we decided to go see a movie. (This is really sad, isn't it? Going to a movie for AC and food.) Of course everything in Berkeley or Emeryville started later than we wanted or we had to be there in the next five minutes. Then I found that Parkway was playing V for Vendetta at 6. Perfect timing with food and AC.
I really liked V for Vendetta. Can we say 'Heil Bush' though? And that's all I have to say about that and this weekend. I guess I'll go nail some boards onto the wall.
