As you all know, I bought a trash book to read on Monday.
Sadly, I have finished it before finishing The Secret Life of Bees. It was really short and it was really trashy, my favorite kind. However, I thought that I'd give a book report to prevent anyone else from reading this book.
"Why did I bother finishing it if the book wasn't that good?" you might ask.
Many years ago, my mother paid me $1 to finish a book - her theory was that I would't know that I really didn't like it until I got to the end. I finished the book. I got my dollar and she made me do a book report. I won't get a $1 for this one, but I will give a book report.
Lara by Beatrice Small
Synopsis:
This is a fantasy trash book detailing the adventures of our heroine Lara. This is the first look into the fantasy world of Hetar - with magic, fairies, princes, and giants. The story centers around Lara, a half-fairy, who is sold as a slave by her father so that he can further his future. She is sold to the Master of Merchants who hopes to make a large profit by auctioning her off to the Pleasure Houses. Because she is so beautiful, her sale is banned and she is shipped off to the coastal region in hopes of an even larger profit from the Coastal Kings. Her adventures are delayed as she finds herself a slave in the Forest Kingdom. Her adventure continues as she escapes to the desert where she is set free. She then must choose the path of her destiny by leaving the desert for the coast or the outlands. Her choice leads her to love and mayhem.
Of course if you want to know more, you'll have to read the book.
Why this book sucks ass:
Normally, I enjoy books by Beatrice Small. I used to think that her writing was fairly good. I also appreciate the way she uses a character in several books creating chronicles of their lives. I thought I would enjoy the fantasy aspect of this book, but it is nothing more than a rehash of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with some old wives tales thrown in for good measure. The details of Lara's journey are repeated at least once a chapter and for the most part verbatim. It truly looks like a copy/paste job. Lara's character also seems to miraculously develop attributes or gifts that are swiftly back-pedaled to explain how those gifts came to be. Finally, this book does not follow the normal cadence of trash books. I don't think that I can use the fantasy aspect as the reason for this.
Recommended? Nope
Stay tuned for other book reports by me. : )
