Late yesterday I ventured into the backyard to pick some lemons and check on how the figs were ripening. Thanks to my superworms I have beautiful figs.
Think tennis ball size. Yum!

Wow. Our figs didn't ripen until September last year. Now you've made me want to go out and survey their progress. I haven't checked on them in about a week. They should be giant with all the rain we've had.

And what are superworms??

We get about three phases of figs. Usually starting in August, then I'll get another batch in September and a small one in October. These are a bit early. I'm guessing it's because we had so much rain when the fig tree started budding.

The only reason I checked them last night is because someone at work told Ronette that there was no way we had figs the size of tennis balls. I sent her to work with about 2 dozen (the ones I could reach anyway) all somewhere between golf ball plus some and tennis ball. They're freakin' HUGE!!!!! I think they are bigger than they were last year. Now I'm just hoping that I can get off this first batch before we leave so I don't have to clean up figs in the yard.

The superworms. A while back I posted a picture of a worm that I am now referring to as a superworm (http://yesimthegirl.livejournal.com/116353.html). I figure that they must have something to do with how well this tree is doing.

Oh, yeah! I remember the superworm. I thought you had discovered some breakthrough in fertilizer technology. This is just as good.

Last I looked, our figs were already bigger then the ones we had last fall. I'm hoping they taste as good as they look.

I admit it. You can pick your own figs? I'm jealous.

If I could mail them just picked and know they would arrive okay to eat, I would. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out how not to waste a tree full of figs.

I'd be just gorging myself on fresh figs all day but if it's a whole treeful then maybe the novelty would wear off. Maybe. I don't really know how to cook with figs since the fresh ones seemed too fabulous to do anything else with but I've heard it pairs well with meat.
