Oh god it's not ant time yet is it??? I have to say that, second to local politics, the ant thing is the worst thing about living in CA. They're a huge annoyance.
We've had a lot of success with Grant's Kills Ants stakes (you can get them at Ace, Long's, and Safeway), but I don't know if they're suitable for a household with pets, as they're laden with arsenic. Attacking them with Clorox wipes, three or four rounds of killification throughout the day, also helps a lot.
I have sprayed them down with bleach water. I even bought stuff that you put in there path to eat and then they take it back to the nest. They've been having a great time with that, but I've temporarily increased their numbers because I'm feeding them poison. Next step is to caulk up their entry point.
ants are from hell we had serious infestation in the spring but haven't seen any in a few weeks now (shh, don't tell 'em) yeah, I'd come out to the kitchen in the morning and the little fuckers would be all over the counters eh, could be worse, I guess, could be roaches or even crocodiles :)
